Jack Barner
Kane
On Sunday, August 2, our wonderful husband, father, papa, uncle and br
other was unexpectedly called to his eternal home. Jack was a specia
l man whose true passion was dedicating himself and his life to his fa
mily. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 43 years, Ju
dith Sleeman Barner. His children, Jodell Barner and Jason Barner, we
e the pride and joy of his life. Also surviving are his "favorite da
ughter-in-law" Michele Nuhfer Barner and his two grandchildren that h
e adored, Alaina & Curtis Barner. Jack V. Barner was an avid and resp
ected outdoorsman and sportsman. He loved all sports, but his true fa
vorite was football. Jack was an all-star football player in his da
y and he especially loved watching the Kane Wolves play under the lead
ership of his son, Jason.
Jack V. Barner, 67, of 26 VanEttan Avenue, Sheffield, died Sunday, Aug
ust 2, 2009, at Warren General Hospital.
Born August 20, 1941, in Kane, he was a son of Cecil and Harriet Porte
Barner. On October 9, 1965, in Clarendon, he married Judith Sleema
who survives.
Mr. Barner served in the Navy during the Vietnam Era.
He was an engineer in the boiler plant at Warren State Hospital. He b
elonged to the Sheffield VFW Color Honor Guard and was a lifelong memb
er of the Sheffield Sports Boosters.
He also belonged to the Kane Fish and Game Club, the Kalbfus Rod and G
un Club, the Sheffield Rod and Gun Club and was a member of the Americ
an Legion in Sheffield.
He is also survived by two sisters, Inez (Kirby) Lindsey of Sheffiel
d and Ardith Knopf of Warren; two brothers, Donald (Becky) Hilyer of W
arren and Herman (Josephine) Hilyer of Erie; and several nieces and ne
phews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother
, Almeda Hilyer-Barner; five brothers, Raymond Barner, Arthur Barner
, Richard Barner, Gene Barner and Harry Hilyer; and three sisters, Bea
trice Nuhfer, Irma Spicer and Ann Asel.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at Bethany Luth
eran Church, 110 Church Street, Sheffield, where a funeral service wi
ll be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday with The Rev. Donald Costlow, pasto
, officiating. Burial will be at Sheffield Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sheffield VFW Color Honor Guard.
