    DeEtte Barner Obituary
    DeEtte Barner passed away at the wonderful age of 95 on Friday Sept. 1
    6th at her home in South Pasadena surrounded by friends and family. De
    Ette was born on a dairy farm in Oklahoma in 1921. She was a part of w
    hat we call "The Great Generation". She lived through the dust bowl an
    d WW2 and witnessed many social changes. She moved to California durin
    g the war and took her first degree in laboratory technology. She work
    ed for Dr. Norwood for many years across the street from the Huntingto
    . Later in life she received a teaching degree and then an MFCC. Sh
    e dedicated her life to helping people and was instrumental in aidin
    g many Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon. She also helped m
    any people recover from alcohol addiction. There are many people who c
    an point to DeEtte and say she bettered their lives. Some of DeEtte'
    s best memories involved her volunteer work for APLA and the Braille I
    stitute. She loved to go to lectures at Caltech, the Arlington garden
    s and walk the hills of South Pasadena and could be seen walking up un
    til the day before she fell and broke her hip. She was an active lad
    y that climbed a tree on Orange Grove every year to see the Rose Parad
    e. She was a dedicated member of the Aldersgate class at the First Met
    hodist church on Colorado. DeEtte is survived by her daughter Claudi
    a van Corva of Altadena, her son Richard Barner of South Pasadena, he
    grandson Remo Thorsen of Altadena and two great grandchildren, Mia a
    d Thor Thorsen of Altadena.
