    Fred Barner, 78, a retired linotype operator for The Inquirer, died ye
    sterday at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Northern Division. He live
    d in the Germantown section of the city.

    A native of Huntingdon, he came to Philadelphia in the Depression days
    , looking for work. A friend recommended him for a job in The Inquirer
    's printing plant. He went to work on Oct. 23, 1936, and retired on De
    c. 28, 1974.

    An active bowler, he continued in league competition until a short tim
    e before his death.

    Survivors: wife, Violet; daughter, Ruth Fell; sons, the Rev. Thomas an
    d Samuel; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    Services: memorial, 1 p.m. Friday, Redeemer Memorial Presbyterian Chur
    ch, Penn, Chew and Wister Streets.

    Violet C. McDowell Barner , 92, of Upland, a former longtime Philadelp
    hia resident, died Nov. 2 at Riddle Hospital.

    Born in Wilkensburg, Pa., she was a graduate of Wilkensburg High Schoo
    l and the Nyack Bible College in Nyack, N.Y.

    She lived in Philadelphia for 45 years, before moving to Upland six ye
    ars ago. She attended the Garden City Chapel in Wallingford.

    She was the widow of Fred T. Barner , who died in 1985.

    Mrs. Barner is survived by a daughter, Ruth B. Fell of Folsom; two son
    s, F. Thomas Barner of Sigel, Pa., and Samuel S. Barner of Ballston, N
    .Y.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

    Calling will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the William S
    . Bleyler Funeral Home, 500 W. 22nd St., Upland.

    Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

    There will be a memorial service Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Garden Cit
    y Chapel, 25 Cedar Road, Wallingford.

    Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons Memorial Bible Chairman
    , Delaware County South Camp, P.O. Box 1108, Brookhaven, Pa 19015.
