    George Brenneman Barner, 104
    KENNEBUNK -- George Brenneman Barner was born in Webster City, Iowa on Dec. 20, 1908. He studied at Grinnell College, then Harvard College where he graduated with the Class of 1929.

    After two years at Harvard Law School, Mr. Barner transferred to Boston University Law School, graduating with the Class of 1934. Following law school, Mr. Barne pursued graduate studies in jurisprudence at St. Edmund Hall in Oxfod University in England, matriculating with the Class of 1935.

    Mr. Barner's legal career spanned more than 35 years and included practicing in New York and Boston, eventually establishing his own firm of Barner & Lundquist in Melrose, Mass. He was instrumental in the approval and construction of numerous housing developments throughout Massachusetts including Wingaersheek Beach and New Seabury on the Cape. He served two terms as Alderman of the City of Melrose and also served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

    Mr. Barner's first marriage was to Vivianne Wentworth Eldridge of Portsmouth, N.H., with whom he had three children. Vivianne suffered an untimely death in 1958 and in 1962, Mr. Barner married Barbara Bryant Thayer who herself had two children from a prior marriage. In 1964 they had their first child together.
    Throughout his life, Mr. Barner pursued numerous interests and actively participated in myriad clubs. While at Harvard, Mr. Barner was a member of the Pi Eta Theatrical Club and was elected to the highest office of the SAE fraternity. Mr. Barner was a Shriner and life member of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company. He was Judge Advocate in Chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion and a life member of SAR. An avid sailor, he was also a life member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mass.

    Mr. Barner started collecting stamps at the age of eight and continued this hobby, which allowed him to communicate with people from all over the world, until just before his death. An enthusiastic traveler, M. Barner explored much of Brazil during the 1950s and gave regular slide shows on his adventures up and down the Amazon. He hitchhiked throughout Europe as a teenager and in later years made trips to West Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan.

    In retirement, Mr. Barner and his wife, Barbara, lived on the West Coast of Florida and in Kennebunkport. Mrs. Barner predeceased her husband in 2010.

    He is survived by his children, Barry Barner of Harvey Station, New Brunswick, Pamela Carroll of Westmoreland, N.H., Dean Barner of Callande, Ontario, Christian L. Barner of Kennebunkport, and Kim Thayer Streetman of Newton, Mass. His stepson, Bryant Thayer, predeceased him in 2011. His many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive him.

    George Brenneman Barner, a former Melrose alderman, died on Sept. 10 i Kennebunk, Maine, where he lived in his later years. He was 104 years old.

    Barner was an attorney whose legal career spanned more than 35 years ad included practicing in both large and small firms from New York to Boston. He eventually established his own firm, Barner & Lundquist, in Melrose.

    “There, he advised clients in all aspects of the law and was instrumental in the approval and construction of numerous prestigious housing developments throughout Massachusetts including Wingaersheek Beach and New Seabury on the Cape,” according to his obituary.

    He served two terms as an alderman for the city of Melrose and also served in the Coast Guard during World War II, his family said.

    Born in Iowa in 1908, Barner studied at Grinnell College for more than a year before transferring to Harvard College, where he graduated with the Class of 1929. After two years at Harvard Law School, he transferred to Boston University Law School where he graduated with the Class of 1934.

    After law school, Barner pursued graduate studies in jurisprudence at St. Edmund Hall in Oxford University in England, where he was a member of the Class of 1935.

    George was honored at St. Edmund Hall’s 27th New York Dinner in 2011 with a Resolution of Appreciation for his dedication to the college and the university, according to the school’s website.

    “Now, therefore, be it resolved that the North American Alumni/Alumnae Association extends its sincere and profound gratitude to George Breeman Barner for his remarkable loyalty and devotion to St. Edmund Hall and the enhancement of Oxford University and for his extraordinary 103 years,′ the proclamation read.

    Barner was involved in many community activities in adulthood as well as during his childhood years. At Harvard, he was a prominent member of the Pi Eta Theatrical Club and was elected to the highest office of the SAE fraternity.

    He was a Shriner and life member of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company. He was judge advocate in chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion and a life member of SAR. An avid sailor, he was also a life member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead.

    Barner was an avid traveler, visiting Brazil, West Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan. He also used these trips to pursue stamp collecting, a hobby he was passionate about.

    Barner is survived by his children: Barry Barner of New Bruswick; Pamela Carroll of New Hampshire; Dean Barner of Ontario; Christian L. Barner of Maine, and Kim Thayer Streetman of Newton, Mass. Also surviving him are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    His stepson, Bryant Thayer, predeceased him in 2011, as did his first wife, Vivianne Wentworth Eldridge, who died in 1958, and Barbara Bryant Thayer, who died in 2010.

    George Brenneman Barner is the son of George Stewart Barner and Romayne Hertzler Brenneman Strickler.     GEORGE S. BARNER, a prosperous student-at-law of Shippensburg, Pa., i
    s one
    of the enterprising young men of that locality. He was born in the bor
    ough of
    Shippensburg, Oct. 26, 1878, son of John L. and May Ella (Long) Barner
    .

    (I) George Barner, his paternal grandfather, was a native of PA,
    of German descent. In early life he was a carpenter, but later becam
    e a
    justice of the peace in Juniata Co, PA., in which honorable position h
    e
    discharged the responsible duties for over thirty years. Naturally a m
    an of
    his calibre, and holding the office he did, was prominent, and many o
    f the
    improvements of his day were given his ready and effective support. He
    married Lydia Lehr, daughter of Peter Lehr, a farmer. The life of this
    excellent man was spent upon the farm, save for a period when he serve
    d in
    the war of 1812. Nine children were born to George and Lydia (Lehr) Ba
    er,
    of whom John L., the father of our subject, was the youngest.

    (II) John L. Barner was reared in Juniata Co, PA., where he was born
    July 16, 1844, and he received a good, common school education. At th
    e age of
    twenty-three years, he removed to Shippensburg, and engaged as clerk f
    or
    early two years in the employ of George H. Stewart, a dry goods merch
    ant.
    When Mr. Stewart sold his store, Mr. Barner accepted a position in a s
    imilar
    capacity in the Cumberland Valley freight office of J. B. Hurst & Co
    , and
    emained with them for nearly two years. He was then appointed freigh
    t and
    ticket agent for the Cumberland Valley Railroad Co, which position h
    e filled
    until August, 1881, since which time he has been engaged in settling t
    he
    estate of the late Ira Long, and also in settling the estate of his
    father-in-law C. Long, late a wealthy citizen of Shippensburg.

    In 1871 Mr. Barner was united in marriage to Mary Ella Long, daughte
    of
    Christian and Hannah Ellen (Atkinson) Long, and to them was born Oct
    . 6,
    1878, one son, George Stewart, named in honor of Mr. Barner's first em
    ployer
    in Shippensburg. Mr. and Mrs. Barner are members of the Presbyterian C
    hurch,
    and take an active part in the work of the church. For four years Mr
    . Barner
    has served as justice of the peace in Shippensburg, and he is also a n
    otary
    public. In politics he is a Democrat, and he is a most worthy and high
    ly
    esteemed man.

    George S. Barner was very liberally educated, having been graduated fr
    om
    the high school of Shippensburg, when he went to the Chambersburg acad
    emy,
    where he was prepared for college. In 1898, he entered Washington and
    Jefferson College at Washington, Pa., from which he was graduated in 1
    903,
    and then entered upon his studies with the Hon. E. B. Watts, of Carlis
    le, it
    being his purpose to become a lawyer, and he has opened a large offic
    e in
    Carlisle in connection with his law studies. Mr. Barner is very popula

    socially, being one of the leaders in the best circles of the city.

    Christian Long left him a large portion of his estate, which amounte
    d to
    $300,000, and the young man has a brilliant future before him. He come
    s of
    excellent stock on both sides, and the various names are connected wit
    h the
    history of the State, in its development as a commonwealth.

    He is at present a student in the Dickinson School of Law, class of 19
    06.
