| 152 | Fred Barner, 78, a retired linotype operator for The Inquirer, died ye sterday at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Northern Division. He live d in the Germantown section of the city. A native of Huntingdon, he came to Philadelphia in the Depression days , looking for work. A friend recommended him for a job in The Inquirer 's printing plant. He went to work on Oct. 23, 1936, and retired on De c. 28, 1974. An active bowler, he continued in league competition until a short tim e before his death. Survivors: wife, Violet; daughter, Ruth Fell; sons, the Rev. Thomas an d Samuel; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. B orn Feb. 1, 1926 in Mackeyville, PA he was the son of the late Georg e B. and Amanda Elizabeth Sager Furst. On Sept. 18, 1944 he married M ary Ann Kyle who died July 18, 2001. A graduate of the Mill Hall High School, Fred was a W. W. II veteran o f the U. S. Army Air Force serving as a SGT. In the 301st Army Air For ce Base Unit. For his service he received the W. W. II Victory Medal , the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African- Middle Eastern Serv ice Medal. Fred had visited the W. W. II Memorial in Washington, D C with a group of other veterans on a bus trip organized as a senior p oject in 2015. He was a long time general manager of Kyle’s Dairy, Ma ckeyville and retired in 2006 as a rural route deliveryman for the U.S .P.S. after 10 yrs. service. | 155 | Full page bio on Barner Swartz in the # 27 - 2000 - Barner Family News letter --------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------ Sunbury Daily Item 4/15/2008 Barner Schumann Swartz MILLERSTOWN - Barner Schumann Swartz, 88, of North Market Street, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at his home. He was born Sept. 4, 1919, a son of Banks Leister Swartz and Dora Ann Barner Swartz. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Wilma Jean Bitting. Born and reared in rural Juniata Co, near Richfield, Barner graduated from Liverpool High School in 1936, received his bachelor's degree in music from Susquehanna University in 1940 and his master's degree in music education from PA State University in 1949. Barner began his teaching career in the Millerstown schools in 1940. When the district reorganized in 1949, he became director of bands in the new Greenwood School District and held that position until his ret irement in 1977. During his tenure, the Greenwood High School band won four superior ra tings in marching band competitions and five superior ratings in district and state musi c contests. Barner served as guest conductor for various county and district festivals an d adjudicated umerous music contests. He was a member of the National Advisory Boar d of Modern Music Masters, the national music honor society for high school musi c students. In 1965, he was honored by his students, past and present, in a "Thi s is Your Life" program, and in 1967, he was selected as Teacher of the Year by the Pe y County Education Association and Region K educational unit of the state. He w as further honored by receiving a citation from the state Department of Education for out standing contributions in the field of music education. In 1972, he received the Phi Beta M u Outstanding Bandmaster Award for the state of PA, awarded by the Nu Chapter of the National Bandmasters Fraternity. Following his 37-year teaching career, in 1977, Barner organized the G eenwood Community Band and served as its conductor for 19 years. He then hel d the title of conductor emeritus and continued his association in the band and affil iated brass choir as a member of the French horn section until 2005. Barner was an active member of Highland United Presbyterian Church, wh ere he was an elder, choir member, choir director and assistant choir director for m any years. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Eastern Perry County Recital Ser ies concerts presented at the church, featuring talented musicians from the centra l PA area. During World War II, Barner served in the Army as a bandsman, playin g French horn in the 216th Army Ground Forces Band at Camp Gordon, Ga. He later became a me mber of the 553rd Air Force Band of the PA Air National Guard, where he was a memb er of the French horn section and vocal soloist. After 22 years of service , he retired as a senior master sergeant, band superintendant and assistant bandmaster. He wa s awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for distinguished and meritorious service. Gardner, 84 , passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Mount Nittany Medical Centre , State College, Centre Co, PA Born on March 17, 1924 in New York City , he was the son of the late Braton R. and Helen M. Gardner. On Septem ber 8, 1951, he married Eleanor Tobias of Woolrich, who survives him . In 1938, he moved to State College from Montrose, graduating from St ate College High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force in Wo ld War II, operating a pressure chamber at the 29th Pressure Trainin g Unit at the San Antonio Cadet Training Center. He received a Bachelo s degree in 1950 from Penn State, where he was a member of Phi Gamm a Delta social fraternity, Penn State Thespians, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia , and Psi Chi. He was an announcer at WMAJ radio station while studyin g for his Masters degree, which he received in 1952. Stating in 1952 , he was employed by HRB for 18 years as a Senior Intelligence Analyst . He later became a Senior Systems Analyst at Desmatics, Inc. He wa s a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association, a member of Palm er Museum and of the Centre County Historical Society. He enjoyed man y years of golf at Centre Hills Country Club - from his arrival in 193 8 until recent years when he became ill. He also greatly enjoyed saili g and completed several U.S. Power Squadron courses. After retirement , he made many trips to Europe with his wife and was especially fond o f Switzerland, which they visited 13 times. In addition to his wife, h e is survived by three sons; Robert R. of Santa Fe, N.M., Michael S. o f Hattaras, N.C., and Thomas A. of State College. He was predeceased b y his parents and a sister, Mary Gardner Shewey. There will be no publ ic visitation. A graveside service for family members will be held i Woolrich. Barner, 85, of 1445 Sycamore Road, Montoursville, an d a former South Williamsport native, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 a t Sycamore Manor Health Care Center, Montoursville. Born Oct. 29, 1923 in South Williamsport, she was the daughter of th e late Howard J. and Mabel M. Kast Shoup. Her husband of 47 years, Jac k M. Barner, preceded her in death on May 2, 1996. Mrs. Barner was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, South Wil liamsport, where over the years, she had served as a Sunday School tea cher and as a member of the Altar Guild of the church. Geraldine was a graduate of the Class of 1941 of the South Williamspor t High School, and more recently was a member of the "Class of '41 Lun ch Bunch." On Dec. 22, 1937, in Howard, she married Gerald Lowery Rogers w ho preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1961. She is survived by their th ee children, Gerald Eugene Rogers (Loretta), of State College, a twi son, Ronnie Lee Rogers, of Bellefonte; and a twin daughter, Bonnie L ou Rogers Moerschbacher, of State College. On Dec. 15, 1968, in Centr e Hall, she married Wallace L. Bohn who preceded her in death on Feb . 15, 1992. She was a member of the Logan Grange at Pleasant Gap, an d was affiliated with the Ladies Aid, where she assisted with many ban quets of the Granges. She was also a member of the Progress Grange i Centre Hall. Geraldine had 50 years of Grange membership. An avid outdoors person, she enjoyed gardening, especi ally growing flowers, hunting and fly fishing. She also enjoyed travel ing, particularly their annual family Canadian fishing trip. She was preceded in de ath by her husband, Dorsey Barner Gruver, her brothers and sisters, an d one grandson. Melva is survived by her four children, five grandchil dren and three great grandchildren. Compassionate by nature, Melva enj oyed volunteer nursing, care giving and other community service throug hout most of her adult life. Melva had great respect for education an d lifelong learning. With a sharp wit and mind, she enjoyed the compan y of others and kept abreast of world affairs, even after failing eyes ight curtailed her love of reading. Melva appreciated beauty in its ma y forms in both nature and art. Her soul responded with delight to ba bies, whether human or animal, and the burst of unfolding life in spri g. Melva married Dorsey in New Kensington, PA in 1932. They moved t o Southern California in 1942 with three children, Martha, Dorsey Jr. , and Elizabeth. Their fourth child, Nina, was born in 1952. Melva an d Dorsey moved from Northridge, CA to Ashland, OR in 1977. To continu e her volunteer work, she joined the Ashland Community Hospital Auxili ary. She was also active for several years in the Garden Club, Chambe of Commerce and Shakespeare Festival. After her husband, Dorsey, die d in 1998, Melva relocated to be near family in Gig Harbor, WA and lat er to San Leandro, CA. At her request, no services will be held. He enjoyed fishing and collecting John Deere memorabilia. Upon his r etirement, Harry and his wife, Ruth, resided in the winter months in O keechobee, Fla. He was blessed to have his children, grandchildren an d great-granddaughters in close proximity to him, and being able to sh are in their lives and watching the children grow. He also enjoyed cam ping at the Grange Fair and spending time chatting with all his friend s. Surviving are a daughter, Judy Seymour and her husband, Jeff, of Sn ydertown; a son, Larry A. Haagen and his wife, Paula, of Snydertown; s isters, Ida Cunnane, of Beech Creek and Gladys Dreese, of Pleasant Gap ; four grandchildren, Kelly Berkey and husband, Franklin, Amy Haagen E vans and husband, Chris, David Haagen and fiance, Amy Fanning, and Nic holas Seymour; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Allison Berke y. Harold was born on January 16 , 1919 in Stapleton, NB to Lester M. and Hazel Raynard Barner. He mar ied Dorothy May Francis on October 17, 1947 in Jackson Hole, WY. H e was a rural postal route carrier. He worked for the postal servic e for 23 years and retired in 1981. Harold was very involved in the B elgrade community with such activities as an instructor for the Hunte Safety Course, helped start the first Belgrade Boy Scouts, one of th e founding fathers of the Fall Festival, City Council Member, Panthe Sports Booster, Baghdad Shrine Temple and 58 years as a Master Maso in Belgrade Lodge No.68. He was also a Master Gardener and was invo lved in the Nebraska State FFA Scholarhip Fund. Harold served his cou try in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2001. He was educated at the Ridge Grammar School house in Synder County. Mr. Wieder retired from the Hempfield School District May 18, 1979, wh ere he was employed as a custodial for 18½ years. He was previously e gaged in farming for more than 20 years in the Landisville area. Mr. Wieder was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Ea st Petersburg, and its senior choir, was an usher, and assistant to th e treasurer for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather wh o genuinely enjoyed his home and yard work. Surviving, one son and daughter-in-law, Clarence M. and Karen Wieder o f Leola; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda E. and James R. Clark o f York and Janet L. and Richard E. She was a member of the former Chapter 7, Easte Star, Milton. In her spare time she was a volunteer room mother in the Lewisburg pub lic schools. Hazel also enjoyed growing flowers.
