He was born on December 7, 1930 in Logan Twp, Clinton County. He i s a son of the late George W. and Adeliade G. Heckman. He honorably se ved in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., as an elec tronic fire control equipment repairman instructor following graduatio from high school and a year of college. George began his accomplishe d floral design career at Bill McMullen's Florist in State College bef ore entering the service. He then worked for Ray Lyon's Florist and Gr eenhouses, Bellefonte before moving to Danville in 1960 where he owne d and operated George's Flowers and Gifts, a successful business for o ver 25 years. He also owned and operated George's Flowers, Gifts and D ecorative Accessories, George's Custom Framing and George's Liberty Ga dens all of Danville and George's Flowers and Gifts, Milton. His land scape design passion lead him to own and operate George's Treeland Nur sery, Shamokin Dam. Most recently, he had done the interior design o f his daughter's beauty shop, A Cut Above in Lewisburg where he was al so the valued bookkeeper and will be sadly missed. George enjoyed trav eling and made many trips with friends and family. He is survived by h is long time friend and companion, Allan Wagner; a daughter, E. George tte and husband Carl of Montandon; sons Patrick, and Drue and wife Mel issa of Berwick; five granddaughters; a brother Daniel and wife Eilee of Tylersville; two sisters, Emma Henderson of Centre Hall, and Bett y and husband Harry Barner, Lamar; and many nieces and nephews. She was a member and the former treasurer of St. John's Lutheran Church, Jersey Shore. Her survivors include four sons, Robert C., Michael E. Larry was born in Be llefonte, a son of the late Harry 'Boots' Haagen and Ruth (Waltz) Haag en, who survives in Nittany. He is survived by his wife, Paula, and th eir children, Amy and David, both of rural Centre Hall. Also survivin g is his son-in-law, Chris Evans; daughter-in-law, Amy (Fanning) Haage ; five grandsons, Adam, Chase and Gage Evans and Ethan and Landon Haa gen; and his sister, Judy Seymour, of Nittany. Larry was a graduate o f Bellefonte Area High School and Williamsport Technical Institute wit h a certificate in welding. He served stateside in the Army National G uard during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employe d by Cerro Metals in Bellefonte for over 20 years. Larry was of the Lu theran faith. He was a member of the American Legion Post 33 in Bellef onte, the Millheim Fire Company, the Undine Fire Company, and the Walk er Township Fire Company. Larry was a strong person in both body and m ind and he valued hard work. He could fix almost anything. He enjoye d woodworking, shooting darts, riding motorcycles, gardening, making h omemade wine, the Phillies, and watching history and travel DVDs. Hi s retirement years were spent with his children and grandchildren. H e would stop at the drop of a hat to go to them and lend a helping han d. He was very proud of his five grandsons, and enjoyed babysitting an d attending their baseball games. He loved to tell stories and visit w ith friends and old work mates. In accordance with Larry's wishes, fun eral services will be private. H e was born May 30, 1922 in PA to Stanley Cyrus Barner and Lillian Ma e (Sheaffer) Barner. He earned an engineering degree at University o f Pittsburgh. In World War II he was in an OSS unit when he met his wi fe to be, Vicky Dakat-quick Morgan (Trimble). After both were discharg ed at the end of the war, they married September 8, 1945 in Cleveland , OH. Leroy continued in the Army Reserves and retired as a Colonel. H e worked as a design engineer at Republic Steel, Bendix, Conductron an d Chrysler. He enjoyed doing geneological research and was active in t he Barner Reunion committees. He traveled to Germany a few times looki g for German Barner family. He attended the 50th anniversary of D-Da y meeting with several surviving French Underground acquaintances. H e partici-pated in bowling leagues, deer hunting, talking to everyone . He considered the local Big Boy his own private club. He was precede d in death by his parents; his brother, Warren Barner; his daughter, S usan Adele Barner Morseau; and his wife, Vicky Barner. Mrs. Swartz graduated from Goucher College with a bachelor's of ar t degree in 1933 and also from Bucknell University where she earned he master's degree in mathematics in 1936. It was at Bucknell Universit y where she met her husband-to-be, Lloyd Monroe Swartz, or Richfield , who is the son of the late Banks and Dora (Barner) Swartz. They wer e married July 17, 1941 and her passing breaks a marital union of 63 y ears. She was a former member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Lewisburg, t he Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Dormont, and at the time of her deat h, was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mount Lebanon. She wa s active in church activities. Mrs. Swartz had an avid interest in family history and was a member o f the Genealogy Group of Mount Lebanon Public Library. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one son, Lloyd Minor Swart z and wife Carol of Boerne, TX; two daughters, Eleanor S. Sharp and he husband David R. of Murrysville and Margaret Hynes and her husband P aul of Lyman, WY; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; an d one brother, Henry Clay Minor of Mechanicsburg.The was preceded in d eath by one sister, Jean Louise Minor, in infancy. "Lewie" Snook, 70, husband of Iolene (Lamey) Snook, of 111 Sn ook Lane, Loganton, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, a t Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Mahoning Twp, Montour Co, PA. Born on Jan. 27, 1941, in Loganton, Pa., he was the son of the late Wo odrow Wilson and Maude M. (Washburn) Snook. He was currently employed by Webb Super Gro as a truck driver. He wa s also formerly employed by HRI and Dunkle and Grieb as a truck drive and mechanic. In earlier years he was a dairy farmer and drove a mil k truck for himself and Hawksworth Trucking. Lewie and Iolene were wed on March 1, 1958, and shared over 53 years o f marriage together. He was a member of the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren. He was a f ounder and Director of the Clinton County Fair and helped provide muc h of the electrical service. He was also earlier in life active as a 4 H leader. He is survived by his wife and four sons, David L. Snook (Pam) of Loga ton, Rodney P. Snook (Dawn) of Lykens, Gale L. Snook (Tina) of Lock H aven and Lewis D. Snook Jr. of Mill Hall; three daughters, Bonnie L. B eck of Loganton, Ellen K. Meyer (Sam) of Temple, Texas and Connie L. M artin of Loganton; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He i s also survived by five brothers, Kenneth Snook (Norma) of Jersey Shor e, John Snook (Patricia) of Fla., Ed Snook (Jeri) of Antes Fort, Willi am Snook (Dorothy) of Fla. and Joseph Snook of Bronx, N.Y.; and two si sters, Lois McGarvey (Richard) Brooksville, Fla. and Lucy Clymer of Lo ck Haven. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Jeremy Smelt z; a brother, Thomas Snook; and two sisters, Virginia and Elaine Snook . He was a son of the lat e Banks Leister and Dora (Barner) Swartz. On July 17, 1941, he was mar ied to the former Leslie Wheat Minor, who preceded him in death on Ju ly 23, 2004. Mr. Swartz grew up on the family farm near Millerstown. In 1930, he graduated from Newport High School, and, in 1934, he gradu ated from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, with a Bachelor of Ar ts degree in mathematics. Later, he graduated from Bucknell Universit y in Lewisburg in 1937, with a Master of Arts in mathematics Mr. Swartz taught science and mathematics at Liverpool High School fro m 1935 to 1941. He, then, taught mathematics at Bucknell University fr om 1945 to 1955, and he retired as a nuclear engineer for Westinghouse , Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory at West Mifflin in 1981, having serve d in this capacity since 1955. He was a former member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lewisburg , St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mount Lebanon and the Holy Trinity Epis copal Church in Dormont. He and his late wife shared an avid interest in family history. Mr. Sw artz also enjoyed photography. Surviving are: three children, a son and a daughter-in-law, Lloyd Mino Swartz and his wife, Carol, of Boerne Texas, two daughters and a son -in-law, Eleanor S. Sharp and husband, David R., of Murrysville, and M argaret S. Hynes and husband, Paul, of Lyman, Wyo.; two brothers and s isters-in-law, Barner S. Swartz, Wilma Jean and G. Sh e was employed as kitchen help at Riden’s Restaurant and early in lif e at the American Viscose Corp. she was a member of Yeagertown Unite d Methodist Church for more than 65 years and its Sunday school clas s No. 9; the Pensioneers’ Club; the United Commercial Travelers; and t he Lewistown Senior Center. | 244 | Lock Haven Express Friday - December 24, 2004 Benjamin M. Bierly Benjamin M. Bierly, 78, of 422 Oak St., Jersey Shore, died Wednesday , Dec. 22, 2004 at the Williamsport Hospital. He was born April 22, 1926 in Jersey Shore, a son of the late Harold a d Barbara Johnson Bierly. Ben was married in 1950 to the former Marion M. Larrison who survives. He graduated from Jersey Shore High School, where he played basketbal l for the 1943 championship team. He was also a graduate of Dickinso College in Williamsport, now Lycoming College. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran. He directed and played saxophone in a band and orchestra that played a t clubs locally. Early in his life, he worked for Larrison-Bierly Recapping in Jersey S hore. He was a conductor for the N.Y. Central, Penn Central and ConRai l Railroads, retiring in 1988 after 35 years. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, where he was active an d at one time, conducted the boys choir. Ben was known for his master y of intricate inlaid wood pictures and for his artistic ability. man y of his paintings are displayed locally, including at Santinos Restau ant. Ben was an avid bow hunter. Above all, he was a very kind, considerat e and loving family man. Surviving besides his wife, are a daughter, Rebecca (Rich) Buttorff o f Jersey Shore; a son, Michael of Hanover; five grandchildren, Sumer , Misti and Tyson Buttorff and Taylor and Ashley Bierly and two brothe s, Bill Bierly and Harold Bierly, both of Jersey Shore. He was preceded in death by a daughter, April Louise. A celebration of Ben’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grac e Lutheran Church, with his pastor, Rev. Ralph Heagy, officiating. Bur ial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. In keeping with Ben’s wishes, th ere will be no public visitation. His family suggests memorial contrib utions be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1440 W. Washingto Blvd., Chicago, Ill. 60607. Powers, 84, of Avis, residing in Hendersonville, Tenn. , for the past five years with her son, Chester W. Powers, his wife, V icki and granddaughter, Alexandria, was called to rest by her Heavenl y Father on Saturday, March 4. Known to many as “Aunt Peg,” she was born on April 20, 1921 in Rauchto wn, a daughter of the late William E. and Vera M. Bailey Welshans of A vis. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester L. Powers of Avis i March of 1999. Mrs. Powers worked for Bobbie Brooks of Jersey Shore and Lock Haven an d Woolrich Woolen Mills of Woolrich for a total of 28 years. She enjoyed caring for and playing with her granddaughter, Alex. Surviving are one son, Chet and his wife, Vicki, and granddaughter, Al exandria Bailey Powers, all of Hendersonville, Tenn.; five sisters, Es ther Kephart of Avis, Maxine Charles of Jersey Shore, Pauline Reever o f York, Helen Shemory of Waterville and Beverly Rhinehart of Avis; an d one brother, Robert Welshans of Hudson, Fla. She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Welshans of Jersey Sh ore. Her cremation has been finalized. Born on Jan. 5, 1921 in Rauchtown, he was the son of the late Floyd E . and Anna Mary Bower Meixel. He and his wife, the former Evelyn E. Showers, celebrated their 57th w edding anniversary on Sept. 20, 2003. Mr. Meixel was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II . He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was of the Protestant faith. Arthur retired from Alcan Cable in Williamsport in 1981, with over 2 0 years of service as a strander operator. He was also formerly employ ed by the Department of Forestry, the Transcontinental Pipeline, Bethl ehem Steel, and throughout his life as a farmer raising beef cattle an d crop farming. Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews and bro thers and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Wayne P. U bine Funeral Home Inc., Main and Water streets, Loganton, with Pasto Ken Geisewite officiating. Born in Tylersville on Oct. 30, 1917, she was the daughter of the lat e William L. and Barbara Anna (Bierly) Barner. She was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church, Loganton. She was a graduate of Loganton High School, Class of 1934. Barbara was a member of the Sugar Valley Volunteer Fire Co. No. 13, wh ere she served as treasurer for 17 years and was also a charter membe of the ladies auxiliary. She retired in 1980 as the cafeteria manager of the Sugar Valley Schoo l and was a member of PSFSA. Her survivors include a son, William C. (Kathaleen) Brungart of Logant on and a daughter, Gloria (C. Clifford) Geyer of Loganton; five grands ons; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers , Charles and Sherman Barner and two sisters, Mary Gilmore and Wilhelm ina Wasson. Mrs. Barner worked for Piper Aircraft in Renovo for 15 years. She wa s a member of St. Joseph’s Church, the Altar Rosary Society and Cathol ic Daughters of America. She was a 1942 graduate of Renovo High School . Mrs. Barner was an avid baker. She also enjoyed bowling and playing ca ds. She is survived by one son, Kenneth J.
