WILLIAM P. LONG
William Palmer Long, 67, of Liverpool died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at F
ox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia.
He was born Dec. 20, 1942 on his family’s farm in Liverpool Twp. to th
e late William C. and Susan M. (Lyter) Long.
He worked for Bell Telephone, retiring from Bell Atlantic in 1991 a
s a transmission engineer after 27 years of service; was a 1960 gradua
te of Greenwood High School, Millerstown, and a graduate of Harrisbur
g Area Community College with a degree in sociology; an Army veteran
, serving in the intelligence service in Turkey; a member of Chapman C
ommunity Chapel, Port Trevorton, and Bell Telephone Pioneers.
After retirement, he worked full-time in missions, founding Keys Minis
tries which serves Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Joan Summy Long; seven brothers an
d sisters, Julia Koller and Blanche Wallis, both of Liverpool, Mildre
d Murphy of Palmyra, Isabelle Cameron of Huntingdon, Truman E. of Humm
elstown, Carol Wilfong of Marysville and Susan Hoff of Liverpool; an
d three generations of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Smeltzer, and a brother
, Roy C.
A memorial service was held June 11 in Richfield Mennonite Church wit
h pastors Kevin Rathmell, Paul Beech III, Robert T. Gray Jr. and Joh
Briggs and Dr. Robert Miller officiating. Burial was in St. John (Ba
er’s) Lutheran Church Cemetery, Liverpool.
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, handled arrangements.
