Martha Anne Stroup Barner passed on from this world on Friday, Sept. 2
0, 2013, at the Williamsport Home.
She was born in Williamsport on Oct. 25, 1934. She graduated from Will
iamsport High School in 1952. She married Dale Vernon Barner Sr. on Oc
t. 24, 1953. The couple lived in Rauchtown until moving to Capitol Hei
ghts, Md., in 1963, when he began employment with the Federal Highwa
y Administration. She then began a career in banking with the First Na
tional Bank of Southern Maryland.
Mrs. Barner was active in Southern Maryland politics, having served a
s president of the Prince George's County Board of Trade, member of th
e Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce, as well as serving on th
e Board of Trustees of Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
Mrs. Barner retired in June 1995, as a vice-president of M & T Bank Co
poration in Upper Marlboro, Md., having served with them for 35 years
. After residing in North Beach, Md., for a period of time, she return
ed to Williamsport in August, 2012. She most recently resided with he
daughter and son-in-law at 193 Boyles Drive in Cogan Station.
She is pre-deceased by her husband, Dale Vernon Barner Sr.; her parent
s, Harry Donald and Ruth Fry Stroup; sister, Doris June Stroup; and br
other, Jack Donald Stroup.
She is survived by her son Dale Vernon Barner Jr. and his wife Debora
h Rorrer Barner, of Williamsport; grandson, Dale Vernon Barner, III, K
annapolis, N.C.; and great-granddaughter, Liberty Barner. She is als
o survived by her daughter, Ruth Evelyn Barner Boyles and husband Denn
is William Boyles, of Cogan Station.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren by Ruth and Dennis include Jenni
fer Boyles Kellner, husband Joseph Anthony Kellner Jr., and children J
oseph, Anthony, Olivia and Jaimie, of North Beach, Md.; Christopher De
an Boyles and son Joshua Boyles, of Warrens, Wis.; Senior Chief USN Ri
chard William Boyles, wife Cheryl Burroughs Boyles and children Baile
y and Robert, of Joint Base McGuire, N.J.; and Andrew Vernon Boyles, w
ife Theresa Story Boyles and children Nathan and Blake, of Locust Grov
e, Va.
In lieu of flowers, Martha would have preferred donations be made to S
t. James Lutheran Church in Rauchtown, in care of Pastor Gary Shumwa
y at 3242 Middle Road, Jersey Shore, PA 17740.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Luthera
Church, Rauchtown. Burial will be held at Oval Cemetery. A visitatio
will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Knight-Confer Funeral Home, 191
4 Memorial Avenue, Williamsport.
