Francis G. "Bud" Barner Jr., 81, of 666 Park Ave., Tyrone, died Thursd
ay.
He was born in Tyrone, son of the late Francis Glenmar Sr. and Doroth
y Ellen (Calderwood) Barner. He married Beverley A. Hand on May 5, 195
6.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Julie Marie Dillon (Don) of Tyrone
; a son, Jeffrey L. (Brenda) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren: Caitl
inn, Jenna and Olivia; and two sisters: Grace Brickley of Portage an
d Laura Jean Ellenberger of Enola.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Kruis.
Bud was a 1951 graduate of Tyrone High School and served as a corpora
l in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He began working for th
e A&P Tea Co. in 1950 and was there until it closed. In August 1987 h
e was co-owner of the Tyrone IGA grocery store until he retired in Jul
y 1996.
Bud was a life member of the Hookies Fire Company, a life member of VF
W Post 4559 and past commander from 1965-66, a life member of Tyrone E
lks Lodge 212, a member of Tyrone American Legion 281, Bellwood Frater
al Order of Eagles, Tyrone Lodge 494 F&AM and Ancient Accepted Scotti
sh Rite, Altoona, and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Po
lice Bald Eagle Lodge 51.
His favorite pastimes were spending time with his granddaughters, Tyro
e football and organizing bus trips to play the slots at casinos. H
e was known as the "Cookie Man" for supplying cookies for the first ai
d station at DelGrosso's Amusement Park, Tipton.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2
103, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, a
t Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, the Rev. Norman E. Huff officiatin
g. Military honors will be provided by the Tyrone Veterans Honor Guard
.
