Claire E. Karstetter, 63, a resident of the Nippenose Valley for the p
ast 49 years, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at the Gatehouse in Divine Pro
vidence Hospital.
She was born Aug. 5, 1945 in Jersey Shore, a daughter of the late Raym
ond and Edna (Dapp) Dowling Sr.
Claire was married Sept. 5, 1959 to Lewis H. Karstetter Sr. and they r
ecently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary together. Her husban
d has cared for her for the past two years during her illness.
Claire's grandmother and great-grandmother were full-blooded America
Indians and she was very proud of her American Indian heritage. Sh
e was a lover of nature and animals. Claire spent her free time in th
e mountains camping with her family and pets. While camping, she love
d to wake up early and watch deer, turkey and bear in their natural ha
bitat.
Surviving are her loving husband; two sons, Lewis H. (Leda) Karstette
Jr. of Haneyville and Daniel L. (Carrie) Karstetter Sr. of Linden; f
our beloved grandchildren, Daniel L. Karstetter Jr., Mindy N. Karstett
er, Adam S. Sweeney and Marissa Claire Karstetter; a brother, Raymon
d Dowling Jr. of Tennesee; three sisters, Emeline Frey of Bensalem, De
lores Brening of Muncy and Patsy Shilling of Castanea; a sister-in-law
, Connie Brague; two brothers-in-law, Kenny Karstetter and Jack Karste
tter; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Alice Wagner, Evelyn Koch
, Rae Jean Dowling, Mary Sherman and Cecila Dowling.
There will be a visitation for family and friends on Tuesday, Jan. 13
, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N
. Main St., Jersey Shore. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Gatehous
e in her memory.
