Wayne Barner Cooke, 68, a retired IBM employee, died of cancer Oct. 2
0 at Clinton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He lived in the Parkla
d section of Prince George's County.
Mr. Cooke was born in Fresno, Calif., and served four years in the Nav
y. In 1965, he moved to Washington to work for IBM. He retired as a se
ior customer service engineer in 1992.
He volunteered a day each week, teaching mechanical principles to stud
ents at McKinley Technical High School.
He was past president of Oxon Hill Kiwanis International and a membe
of the Experimental Aircraft Association in College Park. Mr. Cook
e also enjoyed beekeeping, organic gardening and helping stray animals
.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Henrietta Cooke of Parkland; t
hree daughters, Dawn Cooke and Kelly Hydoski, both of Gaithersburg, an
d Jennifer Peshek of Chelveston, England; a brother; and a grandson.
