BARNER, VICTORIA ------ Victoria "Vicky" Barner, 76, died March 14, 19
95 at St. Joseph Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI. She was born January 17, 191
9 in Hidden Inlet, AK, to Richard E. Morgan and Emily Lucy Barton,wh
o were members of the Nishga'a Native American tribe of Northwest Brit
ish Columbia. Vicky
grew up with her aunt, Esther Barton, in Cleveland, OH, because of tub
erculosis problems in
the tribe. She completed nursing training in Cleveland and entered th
e Army Nurse Corps,
where she volunteered for service as a flight nurse overseas. As a mem
ber of the 807 Med. Air
Evac. Sqd., she was based in Sicily, Rome and Siena, Italy, flying i
C47s to evacuate
wounded from the front. She received the Air Medal with three oak lea
f clusters. When they
arrived in Siena, her husband-to-be was stationed with an OSS unit a
t a villa overlooking the
city. After their separate returns to the States at the end of WWII, t
hey were married
September 8, 1945 in Cleveland. After 1-1/2 years in Cleveland, they m
oved to Mifflintown. In
1951 her husband's reserve unit was called to active duty and they wer
e stationed for a short
time in California and then sent overseas to Munich and Bad-Tolz, Germ
any. Upon their return
they lived in York, PA, from 1953-1961, and have since lived in Ann Ar
bor. She earned a BA
degree in art at the University of Michigan and then a master's degre
e in education. She
became active in Native American affairs, heritage and especially art
. She is survived by her
husband, Leroy E. Barner; a daughter, Joyce Tinkharn of Ann Arbor; a s
on, Glenn of Marquette,
MI; and five grandchildren. Her daughter, Susan Morseau, preceded he
in death in 1991. Her
surviving siblings are Katy Clayton of Kincolith, BC, Clarence Barto
of Prince Rupert, BC,
Reuben Morgan of Kincolith and George Morgan of Prince Rupert. Her bod
y has been cremated. A
memorial service was held March 19 at the Muehlig Chapel with Maria Me
yers, a Native American
spiritual leader, assisted by Ed Skinner. Burial will take place in Pr
ince Rupert in late
summer after strewing some of her ashes in the Nass River following th
e appropriate rites by
her Nishga'a clan members. Contributions may be made to the American C
ancer Society. She
appreciated all the cards and flowers from her many friends.
