Francis G. "Bud" Barner Jr., 81, of 666 Park Ave., Tyrone, died Thursd
ay.

He was born in Tyrone, son of the late Francis Glenmar Sr. and Doroth
y Ellen (Calderwood) Barner. He married Beverley A. Hand on May 5, 195
6.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Julie Marie Dillon (Don) of Tyrone
; a son, Jeffrey L. (Brenda) of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren: Caitl
inn, Jenna and Olivia; and two sisters: Grace Brickley of Portage an
d Laura Jean Ellenberger of Enola.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Kruis.

Bud was a 1951 graduate of Tyrone High School and served as a corpora
l in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He began working for th
e A&P Tea Co. in 1950 and was there until it closed. In August 1987 h
e was co-owner of the Tyrone IGA grocery store until he retired in Jul
y 1996.

Bud was a life member of the Hookies Fire Company, a life member of VF
W Post 4559 and past commander from 1965-66, a life member of Tyrone E
lks Lodge 212, a member of Tyrone American Legion 281, Bellwood Frater
al Order of Eagles, Tyrone Lodge 494 F&AM and Ancient Accepted Scotti
sh Rite, Altoona, and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Po
lice Bald Eagle Lodge 51.

His favorite pastimes were spending time with his granddaughters, Tyro
e football and organizing bus trips to play the slots at casinos. H
e was known as the "Cookie Man" for supplying cookies for the first ai
d station at DelGrosso's Amusement Park, Tipton.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2
103, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, a
t Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, the Rev. Norman E. Huff officiatin
g. Military honors will be provided by the Tyrone Veterans Honor Guard
.

Jennie L. Rruis, 55, of Skelp Box 490, Altoona RD 3, died Saturday mor
ing, Jan. 24, 2004 at Altoona Hospital after a brief illness. She wa
s born Jan. 30, 1948 in Tyrone, a daughter of the late Francis Glenma
and Dorothy Ellen (Calderwood) Barner Sr. She married Vaughn K. "Sap
" Kruis Sept 2, 1967. He died Sept 10, 2000.
Surviving are two sons: Rick Gray and wife, Deanna, of Tyrone RD 3 an
d Vaughn K. "Bo" Kruis Jr. and wife Angela, of Altoona RD 3; two daugh
ters: Donna Hershel and husband Donald of Carrolltown and Kim Marie Um
holtz and husband Adam in Lake Ariana, FL.; 13 grandchildren; two sist
ers; Grace Brickley and husband Dallas of Portage, and Laura Jean Elle
berger of Enola; a brother, Francis G. "Bud" Barner Jr. of Tyrone; an
d several nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of Altoona Beauty School and was a self-employed ha
ir stylist in her home for 20 years. She also was employed as a nurse'
s aide at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home for the past 10 years.
Mrs. Kruis enjoyed spending her spare time with her grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, an 27, 2
004 at Derman Funeral Home Inc. Tyrone.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan 28, 2004 at th
e funeral home with the Rev. Terryann Talbot-Moses officiating. Interm
ent at Blair Memorial Park, Antis Twp.

Donald Craig Ellenberger, Sr., 58, friend and soul mate of forty year
s with his wife Donna R. Ellenberger, [Watts Township] Duncannon,PA di
ed Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. He w
as born July 3, 1954 in Philipsburg, Rush Twp., PA to the late Donal
d Clark Ellenberger and mother Dorothy Laura Jean Barner.
Donald was employed by the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, Conrail an
d now Norfolk Southern Railroad [Enola Yards] with a total of 38 years
. Also Transport Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO Local 2016 Secretar
y -Treasurer for at least 20 years.
As Donald moves on to that railroad in the sky with all the other reti
ees we can not thank the Transport Workers enough for making his las
t days a dream come true with all the support and care. This support w
as greatly appreciated, especially the coordination from Retired Trans
port Workers President, John Woodward and the Railroad family!
Surviving are his wife, Donna R. Ellenberger, son, Donald Craig Ellenb
erger Jr., Mother, Laura-Jean Ellenberger, four sisters and their fami
lies, as well as mother-in-law, Romaine Ansell, two brother-in-laws an
d their families.
He will be missed by so many and I'm sure he will miss us as he move
s on to join so many others in the Railroad family, that Jack Smith [D
uncannon] will be there to meet him with Emma right behind Jack!!!.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. t
ill 8:00 p.m., at Richardson Funeral Home, Inc., 29 S. Enola Dr., Enol
a, PA. Service's will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.

Mars student heads to vet camp at PSU
ADAMS TWP - Incoming Mars School District senior Olivia Barner has bee
selected to attend the Penn State University College of Agricultura
l Sciences’ Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Camp, June 19 to 24.
Barner, 17, daughter of Jeff and Brenda Barner of Valencia, will joi
high school juniors and seniors from across the country in learnin
g about the veterinary and biomedical professions. She will join in to
urs of veterinary practices and local wildlife centers as well as in l
ectures on animal research, agriculture and diseases.
All participants will interact with veterinarians, immunologists and t
oxicologists and participate in laboratory exercises.
In addition, Barner will work at Seven Fields Veterinary Hospital an
d will continue to serve as a Zoo Teens summer volunteer at the Pittsb
urgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. She has also been offered a zoo internship i
