Video: Scooter rider killed in Puyallup hit-and-run

PUYALLUP, Wash. - A 46-year-old man died Tuesday night when the scoot
er he was riding was hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Witnesses helped police find the man suspected of causing the crash. T
hat driver, a 56-year-old man, left the scene of the crash according t
    o investigators.

The suspect was booked at the Pierce County Jail on vehicular homicid
    e charges.

The deadly hit-and-run crash happened on Ninth Street in Puyallup at a
ound 7 p.m. Ryan Seward was riding home from work on his scooter whe
police say the driver of an SUV, who they believe was drunk, crosse
d the center line and hit Seward head-on.

Ryan Seward spent the last 20 years serving in the Coast Guard. His wi
fe said he planned on retiring this December to go back to school to b
    ecome a history teacher.

"Mrs. Seward described her husband as a ‘pay it forward’ kind of guy,
" said Puyallup Police Lieutenant Scott Engle.

Police said Seward’s family is grateful for the actions of Brian Flinc
    hbaugh.

Flinchbaugh, 29, from Graham, was on his way home from his 22-month-ol
d daughter’s swim lesson when he saw the driver accused of causing th
e wreck speed away from the scene.

"I was mad that someone would actually do that to a person’s family,
    " said Flinchbaugh.

While he followed the driver, his wife Rochelle called 9-1-1 and tol
d police where they were going. Puyallup officers arrested the drive
about 3 miles from the crash scene.

Ryan Seward, 46, is shown here with his wife.

When Flinchbaugh found out he helped catch a driver who had killed som
eone, he was glad he took quick action.

"I think it’s awesome, I really do," Flinchbaugh told KING-5 News.
