Joe was the son of Robert L. Ohnmeiss and Margaret T. (Murnane) Ohnmei
ss. He graduated from Williamsport High School and enlisted in the U.S
. Army shortly after graduation. He retired from the army after 23 yea
s of service. His enlistment included service during the Korean and V
ietnam Wars. He served with the Criminal Investigation Division of th
e Army. Upon retirement he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agri
culture as a special investigator and was stationed in New York City
. He was married to Margaret Ann Gohn/Gahn(?) of Williamsport who pass
ed away in 1983. Surviving are three of their four children, Karen (Oh
meiss) Wolfe of Plainfield, New Jersey, Robert Ohnmeiss of Caldwell
, N.J., and Paul Ohnmeiss of Plainfield, New Jersey. Joe was predeceas
ed by a son, Michael Ohnmeiss. Also surviving are five grandchildren a
d two sisters, Marguerite (Ohnmeiss) Norris of Williamsport and Lucil
le (Ohnmeiss) Hudson of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He is survived by a second wife, the former Estelle Duran of Staten Is
land, New York, four stepchildren and five step grandchildren. As an a
thlete, Joe excelled in golf and baseball. He was a low handicap golfe
. He was a starting pitcher on the U.S. Army baseball team in Japan a
d pitched against many of the major league teams visiting Japan for e
xhibition games during their off-season. He died at a Special Care Nur
sing Facility in Staten Island, New York. Funeral services were held a
t the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Staten Island and intermen
t was at the church cemetery. Joe was a good husband, father, soldie
and friend. He will be missed.
