Esther M. Kephart
Esther M. Kephart of Avis passed away peacefully at the Jersey Shore H
ospital Emergency Room on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl W. Kephar
t Sr., on Nov. 6, 2000. They were united in marriage June 10, 1940 i
Winchester, Va.
Esther was born May 15, 1922 in Rauchtown, the daughter of William Wel
shans and the former Vera Bailey.
She moved with her family to Avis when she was 11 years of age, and gr
aduated from the Avis High School.
During her adult years, Esther worked at the Sylvania Plant and Pipe
Aircraft in Lock Haven. She also worked as a caseworker for the Penn
a. Department of Welfare for several years. In 1942, Ester and Carl fo
unded the Susquehanna Transit Co, in which Esther remained an active a
d integral officer until she became ill in 2005.
Esther was also a well-known figure in Clinton County Democratic organ
izations. For many years she was an active member of the Clinton Count
y Women’s Democratic Club and the Lady Bird Johnson Club of Renovo. Sh
e served as Democratic Committeewoman from Avis Boro and was the Clint
on County Democratic Chairman for several years.
Esther was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avis, wh
ere she was involved in many church activities, as well as serving o
the church council.
Esther loved spending time with her family, her grandchildren, and he
great granddaughter. Even in her later years, Esther remained vibran
t and enjoyed travel. She loved her community and visiting with her fr
iends. Esther was a generous and loving lady who will be greatly misse
d by her family and friends.
Surviving is a son, Carl W. (Christy) Kephart Jr. of Lock Haven; a dau
ghter, Tana M. Ford of Lock Haven; her grandchildren, Cam and Rachae
l Kephart, Taryn Ford Pavlik, Christopher and Mattison Ford; and a gre
at granddaughter, Hailey. Also surviving is a brother, Robert Welshan
s of Hanson, Fla.; four sisters, Maxine Charles of Jersey Shore, Pauli
e Reever of York, Helen Shemory of Waterville, and Beverly Rhinehar
t of Lock Haven.
A brother, Joseph Welshans, and a sister, Marguerite Powers, precede
d Esther in death.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Frede
ick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Friends ma
y call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening in the funeral home. Burial wi
ll be in the Rest Haven Memorial Park. The Rev. Malcolm Benton will of
ficiate.
