h, age 50, of Dumfries, Virginia, died April 3, 2003 in Arlington, Vir
ginia after a year and a half long battle with colon/liver cancer.
He is survived by his wife Beth Omengan, age 49, and his son Kai Alle
Barner, age 13, who live in Woodbridge, Virginia. Brent attended Ant
ioch College for his undergraduate degree in communications and earne
d his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science at the East/West Center of t
he University of Hawaii, where his wife also earned her Ph.D. in cultu
al geography. His dissertation was an analysis of health systems in s
elected countries around the world. His career included working for th
e State of Hawaii (the Hawaiian Legislature) as a policy researcher t
o review proposed new laws, teaching at the University of the Philippi
es at Los Banos at a sociologist, and most recently working for the U
.S. Department of Agriculture, in Washington, D.C.
according to his last wishes, His ashes were dispersed on the Potoma
c River shortly after his death. He and his family, who lived in Hawai
i and the Philippines for all those years (his son was born in Hawai
i and only knew life on an island until a couple of years ago when the
y moved to Virginia), decided water would be a fitting reminder of hi
s life and a way to reconnect to him anywhere in the world.according t
