, he was the son of the late Braton R. and Helen M. Gardner. On Septem
ber 8, 1951, he married Eleanor Tobias of Woolrich, who survives him
. In 1938, he moved to State College from Montrose, graduating from St
ate College High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force in Wo
ld War II, operating a pressure chamber at the 29th Pressure Trainin
g Unit at the San Antonio Cadet Training Center. He received a Bachelo
s degree in 1950 from Penn State, where he was a member of Phi Gamm
a Delta social fraternity, Penn State Thespians, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
, and Psi Chi. He was an announcer at WMAJ radio station while studyin
g for his Masters degree, which he received in 1952. Stating in 1952
, he was employed by HRB for 18 years as a Senior Intelligence Analyst
. He later became a Senior Systems Analyst at Desmatics, Inc. He wa
s a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association, a member of Palm
er Museum and of the Centre County Historical Society. He enjoyed man
y years of golf at Centre Hills Country Club - from his arrival in 193
8 until recent years when he became ill. He also greatly enjoyed saili
g and completed several U.S. Power Squadron courses. After retirement
, he made many trips to Europe with his wife and was especially fond o
f Switzerland, which they visited 13 times. In addition to his wife, h
e is survived by three sons; Robert R. of Santa Fe, N.M., Michael S. o
f Hattaras, N.C., and Thomas A. of State College. He was predeceased b
y his parents and a sister, Mary Gardner Shewey. There will be no publ
ic visitation. A graveside service for family members will be held i
