    Family remembers Dad’s war stories

There are very few veterans who could say they were there from the beg
inning of America's involvement in World War II and were still involve
d in the fighting at the end of the war in Europe.

Ardell Barner was one of them.

Born on Feb. 17, 1922 in North Bend, Barner comes from a family of far
mers who worked a parcel of land running along a stretch of PA Railroa
d tracks in Western Clinton County. Ardell was still a young man whe
his father was killed when a piece of a rail car flew off the trai
and struck him while he was showing his property to some friends.

Ardell, like his brother, Wilbur, was raised by his mother for much o
    f his childhood.

He was only 17 when he left high school and joined the Army. Though h
e had his mother's permission, he was too young to enlist, so he lie
d about his age to sign up in 1939. After basic and specialized traini
g, Ardell was made an infantryman and sent to his first post in Hawai
    i.

He was stationed at the Schofield Barracks on Dec. 7, 1941, the day th
    e Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

"He used to say that the movie 'From Here to Eternity' showed the atta
ck perfectly," said daughter, Wanetta Sockman, 61. "When they starte
d shooting, everyone ran out of the barracks to see what was going on
, and the Japanese just picked them off. He said that's exactly how i
    t happened."

Ardell's son, Kenneth Barner Sr., 58, recalls a story that his fathe
used to tell about the Pearl Harbor attack, immortalized as a "day t
hat will live in infamy" by then-Pres. Franklin Roosevelt.

"One of his (Ardell's) buddies or roommates at Schofield had a bottl
e of whiskey hidden in his footlocker. He said he was saving it fo
a special occasion. Just after the attack, he said it was as specia
l an occasion as he was going to get, and they passed the bottle aroun
    d and drank it."

Not much is known about Ardell's service during the middle of the war.

"I think that's one of my biggest regrets. I never asked Dad about it,
    " Sockman said.

"We do know he was with Patton at the Battle of the Bulge," she went o
to say. "He got out of the service in 1946."

Ardell's brother, Wilbur, also served during this time, in the Navy.

After the war, Ardell returned home, where he met and married Alice Pe
y, who went by the nickname "Brickie" because of her brick-red hair.

"Before they were married, he used to walk from East Renovo to South R
enovo every day to see her," Sockman explained. "Everyone in Renovo ha
d nicknames back then. Dad was called 'Huck.'"

The two were married on Dec. 18, 1947 in Renovo.

Ardell took a job with the PA Railroad after returning home. He late
left to work for an auto repair shop, working his way up to forema
before starting a career with PennDOT. He retired from PennDOT a
    s a real estate specialist.

Ardell was also member of the local chapter of the Elks, where he freq
uently told the story about the bottle of whiskey at Pearl Harbor.

He also talked of getting frostbite during the Battle of the Bulge.

"It never really seemed to bother him," Barner said about his father'
s time in the military. "He did seem to have a certain camaraderie wit
h the other guys who served during the same time."

Barner recalls his father and another veteran from the war, Coot Whitm
an, used to call each other "Pineapple," though he doesn't know why.

Ardell is remembered by his children as being a prankster and a die-ha
d Philadelphia Phillies fan, a trait which he passed on to them. He w
as very sociable and he loved to play cards at the Elks lodge.

"He was a great story teller," Sockman recalls. "Though how much of th
e stories were true, we don't know. Stories get embellished over time.
    "

"He always said he wanted to go back to Hawaii," Sockman said. "But h
    e never made it back."

About her own trip to Pearl Harbor, Sockman said, "It's just so touchi
    g there. It brings tears."

Ardell died at age 71 in 1993. His wife, Alice, passed away in 2005. S
    he was 82 years old.

Kenneth's son, Kenneth Barner Jr., 39, is also a veteran, having serve
d in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Independence during Operation Des
    ert Storm.

As for the Hometown Hero Banner Program, Barner Sr. and Sockman are cl
early supporters of ongoing project to memorialize local veterans an
    d their families.

"I think it's great," said Barner. "The day they had the unveiling (i
August 2009) it was neat how they covered everything up and you ha
d to go to it to unveil it.

"The service at the amphitheater had a great turn out," he continued
    . "It was very nice."

"My dad's generation, they need to be honored for what they did," sai
    d Sockman.

    "They all do."
